UFC229 and Respect

Over the weekend of October 6th, one of the biggest MMA Event went down. And as all of you know the Khabib vs Connor controversy showed just how tense the animosity between the two teams had become. The champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, after forcing Connor McGregor to tap out, jumped on the former champion’s Jiu Jitsu Coach, Dillon Dannis – setting off a chain of events. His actions, regardless of the intentions, legality, etc, – set the standard for his team, his fans, and for those watching the spectacle at home. Khabib apologized for the brawl that ensued and Connor chose to not press charges on the assailants.

Some thing we can learn from this is that we need to respect everyone; for Khabib to react the way he did is unacceptable – but for Dillon Dannis to say provocative insults after this man just choked your guy should been seen as unacceptable too. Everyone has their limit and imagine the adrenaline of being the champ, smashing the trash talking McGregor, and his guy is still talking trash. Emotions were running high and everyone has their limits until they snap and do something out of character.

MMA for the longest time has tried to distance it’s self from this type of publicity, but the UFC is an entertainment business and this is what sells PPV’s. Martial Arts is the practice of disciplining your body and focusing your mind on a given technique and MMA is becoming something different. This is why training Jiu Jitsu and learning MMA through Jiu Jitsu is a better option for those looking for the Warrior’s Path.
